I recently was speaking with a martial arts instructor and was deeply saddened to hear that he may be closing his school. It was upsetting to say the least, in that for starters, he is a friend and no one wants to see a friend suffer. Secondly, he is tremendously talented and has so much to offer. His teaching skills blended with passion are much needed in today’s world. Particularly with kids.

The reason for the disruption is a lack of attendance. This is a common theme, at least in our area. There are a number of reasons:
- If history books are accurately written, this period will go down as America’s second great depression. Disposable income has dried up and many people are suffering. The media hides this fact.
- Potential students and parents of potential students do not know the difference between a quality school and a McDojo. As such, they think that Junior, who has been training a whole 3 weeks and now gets “promoted” is a good thing. Little do they know.
- Skills such as courage and discipline have become rare today. People were rewarded for showing guts. Now, apathy and indifference have replaced grit and guts in many instances.
Things will change as they always do. The economy will one day, pick up. Students and parents will recognize that it is not the color of the belt that matters but the depth of skills. And yes, honor, courage and discipline will again take their high place in society.
It is moments like this that make me think deeply. I empathize with those who are suffering and begin to appreciate to an even greater extent the wonderful people/students who are in our School. Our core group has varied over the years, but there are those who have become die-hards. They have made Systema not just a study of a Russian martial art, but a way of life. In the process, they have created a remarkable school which has withstood the test of time.

Central FL Systema is here. We have withstood challenges, issues and the greatest test of all – the test of time. We are strong and we continue to walk the road to learning this amazing art. There are times we celebrate our victories. Other times, we pause to heal our wounds. Today is a good time to take a moment to appreciate the people and the great opportunity we have created together.
Too many are suffering too much in too many ways. For now, we offering thoughts and prayers of healing to all of them.
In the meantime, with my deepest, heartfelt feeling, I say thank you to everyone.
