Closed Today and Why It is Important

Reminder that today, the Center is closed and we will not be having class in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A word about that. Some special days have lost most of their true meaning. Veteran’s Day is typically “a day off “ for many instead of honoring those that served and gave their life for our country. Thanksgiving has become “turkey and football” instead of a day of gratitude.

Respect today, like all other holidays. . . . .like every minute of every day for that matter, because they all have special meaning. Including today.

Here is a unique thought: Dr. King would have made a great Systema Teacher. One of his messages was equality and strength through non-violence. This should strike a chord with us. It is identical to what we are learning, albeit on a dramatically smaller scale.

His other message can be seen in this story. Thich Naht Hahn is one of my favorite authors and a long time Buddhist monk. He is now in the deep winter of his life but still teachers and impacts others. He often repeats a story involving Dr. King.

Thich was being interview on television and the show was running late. He was supposed to go to breakfast with Dr. King, and had no way of letting him know of his tardiness. Two hours later, Thich showed up. . . only to find that Dr. King kept his breakfast warm for him the whole time.

Everyone matters.

Enjoy your day off and let’s get ready for next week. We are off to a great start this year and now, uninterupted, time to take our training to new heights!
